Prices & payment

3 answers

How much does it cost?

Every price includes each camera’s lens, fluid-head tripod, 1TB drive and two batteries:

  • 5-hour shoots from $40.
  • 2 cameras from $60/day; 3 cameras $80/day.
  • From $25 per camera per day with 4 or more cameras, down to $19.09 with 11.
  • Lights: $10 for one, $25 for three, per day.

Longer rentals cost less per day: a full week is 2.5× the day rate. Book 7+ days ahead: 5% off · 21+ days ahead: 10% · 45+ days ahead: 15%. Small kits are rounded up to a minimum total for each length: Quick Shoot $40, Same-Day $45, Full Day and longer $50. Every kit size and length is on kits & pricing.

How do you work out the “Typical LA rate”?

Next to Full Day (24-hour) camera prices we show a crossed-out Typical LA rate. Here’s where it comes from, checked in September 2026:

  • Comparable complete Blackmagic 6K kits — camera, lens, tripod, SSD and power — rent for $100–$130 per kit per day on ShareGrid in Los Angeles (peer-to-peer listings; our own listings are left out).
  • Renting the same pieces from LA rental houses comes to about $250 per kit per day (the lowest published combination we found was $246).
  • Our Typical LA rate is $95 for one kit and $55 down to $38 per camera for 2–11 kits — below both market figures.

It’s a market comparison, not a former price of ours, so we never call it “was”, “original” or “% off”. We show it only next to Full Day prices, because rental houses price by the day. There’s no reliable market data for shorter rentals, so Quick Shoot, Same-Day, multi-day and light prices have no crossed-out number.

How can I pay?

Credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link (Stripe’s saved-payment option), through Stripe’s secure checkout. We don’t take Venmo. We never see your full card number.

You pay the rental when you book. Your card is saved at checkout for the deposit hold (and, per the rental agreement, for damage or late fees).

Deposit & insurance

3 answers

How does the deposit hold work?

It’s a $300 refundable deposit hold, not a charge — +$100 per camera over 3, so up to $1,100 for 11 cameras.

  • When it’s placed: on the card you booked with, the morning of pickup — at 8:00 AM, or an hour before an earlier pickup. If you book later than that, it’s placed when you book.
  • When it’s released: we release the hold within 24–48 hours of return; your bank may take a few days to show it.
  • Prepaid cards: if you pay with one, we may ask for a different card for the hold.

When can you keep part of the deposit?

Only for what the rental agreement covers: damage, loss or missing items, and late returns. If that happens, we email you what happened and the amount, and release the rest of the hold.

If the cost is more than the hold, the agreement lets us charge the difference to the card you saved at checkout, and we send you the details.

Do I need insurance?

No insurance certificate needed. Instead we place a refundable hold on your card. You’re still responsible for loss or damage up to the gear’s replacement value — see the rental agreement.

So there’s no certificate of insurance (COI) to request from your insurer. If you already carry production insurance, it may cover rented gear — worth checking, but we don’t require it.

Booking, changes & cancellations

3 answers

How far ahead do I need to book?

As little as 2 hours ahead, and up to 365 days out. The booking calendar shows live availability for the number of cameras you want; you can also check the availability calendar first.

Booking early saves money. Book 7+ days ahead: 5% off · 21+ days ahead: 10% · 45+ days ahead: 15%.

How do I change a booking?

Open your booking page (the link is in your confirmation email) or reply to the confirmation email with what you’d like to change: times, cameras, lenses or lights. Changes depend on what’s free at the new time. If the price changes, we’ll confirm the new total with you before anything is charged or refunded.

What if I need to cancel?

  • 48+ hours before pickup: full refund.
  • 24–48 hours before: 50% refund.
  • Less than 24 hours before: no refund.

Any deposit hold is released when you cancel. To cancel, reply to your confirmation email or use your booking page; refunds go back to the card you paid with.

Pickup & return

5 answers

Where and when do I pick up and return?

In Silver Lake, Los Angeles, by appointment, any day between 7:00 AM and 10:00 PM. You choose pickup and return times in 30-minute steps when you book. The exact address is sent with your confirmation.

Rentals are at least 5 hours, so you can pick up in the morning and return the same night. Neighborhoods and drive times are on the pickup page.

What do I need to bring to pickup?

A photo ID that matches the name on the card you paid with. That’s it — the kit comes charged and formatted. If you chose to bring your own EF lens, bring it along so we can check it mounts.

What happens at pickup?

A five-minute walkthrough: how to power the camera, start and stop recording, check the drive and pack the case. Then you check that every case has its camera, lens, tripod, SSD, two batteries, cables and charger, and you’re off. Returns work the same way in reverse.

Why is a kit sometimes not free right after another rental?

Kits are checked, charged and formatted between rentals (we keep a 3-hour turnaround window). When a kit you want is coming back from someone else, the booking calendar shows when it’s ready again.

What if I’m running late to return?

Tell us as soon as you know, by chat or by replying to your confirmation email. If nobody has the kit booked after you, we may be able to extend your booking instead.

Otherwise late returns are billed per started hour at the hourly equivalent of your booking (your rental price divided by the hours you booked), plus any cost the delay causes the next renter. For example, a 3-camera Quick Shoot is $50 for 5 hours, so each started late hour is $10. See late returns in the rental agreement.

The kit

What’s included with each camera?

  • Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K (EF) in cage
  • Your choice of lens
  • Fluid-head tripod
  • Samsung T5 1TB SSD + USB-C cable
  • 2 × 95Wh V-mount batteries
  • D-Tap to 12V power cable
  • Battery charger
  • Padded hard case

Every kit is pre-configured for podcasts and runs from a touchscreen. More on the Blackmagic 6K kit page.

How long can each camera record?

5+ hours per camera at our podcast preset (5.7K Blackmagic RAW 12:1, 24 fps) — up to ~10 hours in 4K. Each camera records to its own 1TB SSD:

Recording time per 1TB drive · Blackmagic RAW 12:1 · 24 fps
ResolutionTime
Full 6K≈ 4 h 17 m
5.7K our podcast preset≈ 5 h 11 m
4K DCI cropped: lenses frame ~1.5× tighter≈ 10 h

At 30 fps every figure drops by about a fifth (5.7K: about 4 h 09 m). The camera shows the exact time left.

Will the batteries last the whole shoot?

Two 95Wh V-mount batteries per camera: 6½+ hours of continuous recording even at the camera’s maximum power draw. They power the camera through a D-Tap to 12V cable, and the charger is in the kit for multi-day rentals.

Are microphones included?

No — the kits are cameras, lenses and support. Each camera has built-in microphones for a guide track (handy for syncing), a mini XLR input with 48V phantom power and a 3.5mm input. For a podcast, plan on a microphone for every voice, recorded to a separate recorder or interface. The equipment checklist covers what to bring.

Which lens should I choose?

  • Sigma 18–35mm f/1.8 Art (≈ 28–55mm on the Pocket 6K): wide shots, two-shots, medium singles.
  • Tamron 24–70mm f/2.8 (≈ 37–109mm on the Pocket 6K): close-ups, medium shots.
  • Tamron 70–200mm f/2.8 (≈ 109–312mm on the Pocket 6K): tight close-ups from a distance, stages, events.

All lenses are Canon EF mount, and you can mix them per camera — or bring your own EF lens. The 2 vs 3 camera guide shows which focal length to use where, and how far back to stand. Details on the lenses page.

Do you rent lights?

Yes, as an add-on to any camera kit: Godox Daylight LED + Softbox — A daylight-balanced (5600K) LED with an octagonal softbox and grid, on its own compact light stand. Plugs into a standard wall outlet. Add one for a key light or three for a full setup.

1 light: $10 · 2 lights: $20 · 3 lights: $25 per day. See the lighting page.

Shooting & editing

2 answers

I’ve never used a cinema camera. Is that a problem?

No. Every kit is pre-configured for podcasts and runs from the camera’s 5-inch touchscreen, and the pickup walkthrough takes about five minutes. The basics:

  • Press the record button on top of the grip, or the round record button on the screen. The timecode turns red while it records.
  • Press FOCUS for one-shot autofocus; tap the screen to choose what to focus on.
  • Double-tap the screen to zoom in and check focus.
  • Press IRIS for automatic exposure.

How do I edit the footage?

With DaVinci Resolve. The free version edits Blackmagic RAW and finishes projects up to Ultra HD (3840 × 2160) at 60p. Each camera’s SSD plugs into your computer over USB-C, so you can copy the footage straight off it. The free Blackmagic RAW Player previews clips.

Copy your footage before you return the kit — drives are formatted between rentals.

Booking direct

1 answer

Why book direct instead of on ShareGrid?

On ShareGrid our 2-camera kit is $80/day plus a 10–15% marketplace fee, and gear is blocked from 2 pm the day before to noon the day after. Book direct: from $60, by the hour.

2-camera kit, same rental length
RentalShareGrid$80 + 10–15% feeDirect
5 hours$88–$92$40
12 hours$88–$92$50
24 hours$88–$92$60
46 hours (ShareGrid’s 2 pm → noon window)$88–$92$75

At each of these lengths, booking direct costs less. When you compare, compare equal lengths: the two sites price longer rentals differently. Direct also skips the insurance paperwork: ShareGrid asks for insurance or a damage waiver; we place a refundable hold instead.
