How to light a two-person podcast

Two softboxes, two faces.

The simplest setup that looks like a show: one key light per person at 45°, softboxes as close as the frame allows.

Top-down lighting plan for a two-person podcastDrawn to scale (grid squares are 50 cm). Host and guest face each other across a table. Light 1 lights the host from 45 degrees off their eyeline, on the far side of the table from the wide camera; light 2 does the same for the guest. Optional light 3 sits behind the host as a hair light. The three cameras of the 3-camera plan are shown faintly for reference.HG123ABC1 m

  1. One light per person.

Put each softbox about 45° off that person’s eyeline, on the far side of the table from your wide camera, so it stays out of the wide shot.

  2. Raise it, then tilt it down.

Set the softbox a little above eye level and angle it down toward the face, the way a window lights a room.

  3. Bring it in close.

Move it as close as your frame allows: the closer the softbox, the softer the light on skin.

  4. Kill the mixed light.

Switch off warm household bulbs, or they show up orange next to the daylight (5600K) LEDs. Set every camera to the same white balance.

  5. Optional third light.

Put it behind one person as a hair light, or aim it at the wall behind you to separate you from the background.
